Not Your Mother’s Mahjong is a New York City American mahjong community built around a simple idea: learning is better when it feels like a night out.

It started around one table.
In 2024, four friends turned a weekly mahjongg night into a ritual we couldn’t keep to ourselves. We hosted monthly games in Chanya’s parents’ apartment, pulled up extra chairs, and welcomed friends of friends.
Today, NYMM gathers beginners, regulars, teachers, strategists, and people who came for a drink and left with a new group chat. We host lessons and social games at restaurants and bars we already love across Brooklyn and Manhattan.
